Sixty long years to seal the Baskerville deal
After a 60 year wait, the Baskerville Foundation is set to begin major works on the sealing of the
gravel entrance road to the much-loved Baskerville Raceway.
Drivers and visitors alike have longed for the sealing of the road, as the gravel road damages their
prized automobiles as they enter the track, but due to a lack of financial support, it had previously
not been possible.
Long-time Tasmanian racing enthusiast, Garth Wigston, said that he was ecstatic that the entrance
to Baskerville was finally going to be sealed and was very impressed the Baskerville Foundation had
raised such an extraordinary amount of money to give the rescue project new life.
“The sealing has been a long time coming – I’ve been visiting Baskerville for years and it got to a
point where I resented entering the track as I couldn’t deal with my car being covered in dust and
damaged by stones,” Mr Wigston said.
“I can’t wait to see the road laid down, because at that point I’ll know the Baskerville Foundation has
achieved one of its goals and I’ll also be able to keep my car in immaculate condition.”
Baskerville Foundation Chairman, Peter Killick, said the re-sealing of the entrance road was the
perfect first step for the Foundation, as it demonstrated to all donors and supporters that the money
raised by the Foundation was going towards a worthy cause.
“The Foundation has received large amounts of support from not only the motorsports community,
but the Tasmanian community in general,” Mr Killick said.
“Long term Tasmanian motorsports supporters Roadways, will be hot mixing the Baskerville Road
entry for us and Brighton Council have installed an extra culvert as well as drainage pipes to widen
the entry.
“We have raised these funds through various raffles, auctions, fundraising events, donations and
sponsorships from local businesses and it’s fantastic to see the hard work and effort put into the
project paying off.”
The Baskerville Foundation was formed in 2013 with the aim of securing the future of Baskerville
Raceway, which requires major renovations in order to survive.
Charged with the goal of raising $600,000 for the refurbishment and repairs of the Baskerville
Raceway, the Foundation has now raised above $160,000 in just over one year.
