Rockliff must condemn divisive FamilyVoice attack
Shadow Education Minister Michelle O’Byrne has called on the State Government to condemn FamilyVoice Australia’s vile attack on a more inclusive education system.
“The group has attacked the Safe Schools Coalition program being rolled out across Australia,” Ms O’Byrne said.
“FamilyVoice Australia equating a more sensitive approach to gender in schools to encouraging anorexia is abhorrent.
“Labor recognises that gender and sexually diverse young people are entitled to a supportive educational environment, free from prejudice.
“A media release from FamilyVoice ridicules anyone struggling with gender identification.
“The language and tone used in the statement doesn’t warrant repeating.
“FamilyVoice demonstrates how out of touch it is by reference a 40-year-old study to support its reprehensible argument.
“Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff must condemn this divisive approach from a group that purports to represent families.
“I note that Liberal Parliamentary Secretary Guy Barnett has in past stood side-by-side with FamilyVoice.
“Does Mr Barnett endorse the group’s latest attack on equality?
“The Safe Schools Coalition program has been successful in Victoria and its national rollout should be supported by Tasmania’s Liberal Government.
“Jeremy Rockliff must confirm he’s asked for Tasmania’s share of the $8 million attached to the program.”
