Rally to Respect World Heritage to coincide with opening of World Heritage Committee meeting
This weekend, Tasmanians will get an opportunity to send a direct message to the World Heritage Committee that they love, respect and want to retain World Heritage protection for some of the globe’s most spectacular forests.
The Rally coincides with the opening of the 2014 Committee meeting, where the Abbott government’s application to remove forests from the World Heritage list, so they can be logged, will be considered.
“Recent revelations of internal Government advice that disturbance in the excision area shoots more holes in the already threadbare arguments of the Federal Government. Mr Abbott’s logging plan is an embarrassment that should be dropped,” said Vica Bayley, spokesperson for the Wilderness Society.
“Expert advice to the World Heritage Committee recommends the application to delist and log these forests be rejected. This rally will help reinforce this message and demonstrate strong local support for forest protection and World Heritage.”
