Matthew Groom: Hydro Tasmania Centenary

Posted on

I am extremely pleased to announce the program of activities celebrating the centenary year of Hydro Tasmania.

The story of The Hydro is a big part of the story of Tasmania. We should take the time to understand its history and celebrate its achievements.

A free program of events over the coming months will allow Tasmanians to fully understand the rich history of Hydro Tasmania and honour the thousands of employees who’ve worked there over the past century.

But this centenary is about more than just recognising the past. It’s about looking to the future.

Today, Hydro Tasmania is Australia’s leading renewable energy businesses, with 30 hydropower stations and two wind farms supplying power to both local and interstate customers through Basslink.

Secure, reliable and affordable energy underpins Tasmania’s economic development and the Liberal Government is committed to restoring our competitive advantage in this area.

We are working with our State-owned businesses, industry and energy users to look at how we can capitalise on our energy assets as a key economic driver to promote growth and create jobs.

The Energy Working Group is also helping to develop the Tasmanian Energy Strategy which will identify ways we can better utilise our energy assets to deliver more choice and better prices for all Tasmanians.

This will help grow the economy, attract new investment and secure jobs.

I congratulate Hydro Tasmania on this milestone and look forward to even more success in the next 100 years.
