Madeleine Ogilvie: Humanitarian focus key for Pontville
Labor Spokesperson for Multicultural Affairs Madeleine Ogilvie said future use of the Pontville Refugee Reception Centre must be focused on humanitarian outcomes, which in turn have a positive economic effect on the state.
“Tasmanians are deeply concerned by the inhumane conditions in which refugees are being detained by our Government,” Ms Ogilvie said.
“There is community concern about policies of ‘round-up’ and deportation offshore. The recent case of local Vietnamese refugees has highlighted this concern.
“Pontville Refugee Reception Centre stands empty and available.
“Jobs previously provided at the centre could be immediately reinstated.
“Reopening Pontville would have a positive economic benefit for Tasmania by creating jobs and investment.
“Federal Member Eric Hutchinson has been in discussion with refugee advocates and no doubt with his State counterparts.
“Will Hodgman says he is happy to have discussions with refugee advocates but it is time for him to show leadership on this issue and actively advocate for the reopening of the Pontville Refugee Welcome Centre.”
