Kim Booth: Tackle Gun Ownership to Reduce Theft Concerns, & Police Pressure
Tougher gun laws would assist in addressing the alarming spate of firearm theft which poses serious risks for both the Tasmania Police force and the community, Greens Leader and Police and Emergency Services spokesperson Kim Booth MP said today.
“The Greens are long on the record calling for greater restrictions on the type and number of semi-automatic and self-loading firearms, as well as secure storage of authorised weapons,” Mr Booth said.
“Removing as many of these high-powered and dangerous weapons is the first step in securing the community’s safety, and reducing the workload of a stretched police force.”
“It is all very well for the Police Minister, Rene Hidding, to raise concerns about the security of the state’s gun registration requirements, but without addressing the type and number of weapons contained on that register, we risk only addressing a symptom rather than the core problem.”
“Its blindingly obvious that demanding our police force make further expenditure cuts, raising concerns about security of the gun register while avoiding the question of appropriate weapon ownership and storage sends mixed messages.”
“Reducing the number of high-powered semi automatic rifles and pistols in our homes, sheds and shacks, will reduce risks of weapons being stolen, and reduce pressures on Tasmania Police, which is facing further resourcing cuts.”
“By refusing to address the core problem now, Minister Hidding is only guaranteeing further time and resources being wasted down the track,” Mr Booth said.
