Jeremy Rockliff: Grants available for community groups working to improve adult literacy
Community groups have been called on to apply for grants under the 26TEN initiative to fund projects aimed at improving the literacy and numeracy skills of working age Tasmanians.
Applications are open now, and close on July 25.
Many Tasmanians have difficulties with literacy and numeracy, which can cause significant disadvantage in engaging in work and even completing everyday tasks.
While the Government is working to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes for our young people, the 26TEN strategy targets those who have left school.
Under the 26TEN Grants Program, administered by Skills Tasmania, grants of up to $50,000 are available to employers, community and industry groups to help working age Tasmanians improve their skills.
Recently, I approved six employer grants totalling $256,569 to:
• Work and Training and the Mersey Community Care Association;
• Work and Training and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre (North);
• Work and Training and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre (South;
• Early Childhood Australia’s Tasmania Branch;
• TasTAFE and Lion – The Heritage;
• Nyrstar Pty Ltd.
These grants will support the recipients to run projects that assist their paid and voluntary workers to build their literacy and numeracy skills.
