Jeremy Rockliff: Review to strengthen Tasmanian farmers’ legal rights

Posted on

The Liberal Government is delivering on one of its major commitments to Tasmanian primary producers: a review of the Primary Industry Activities Protection Act.

We pledged to begin a review of the Act within our first 100 days to strengthen the family farm and rural communities, and I can announce today that work is underway.

This review will examine the effectiveness of the Act in ensuring primary producers are able to undertake their everyday business and manage their farming operations without unreasonable interference.

If necessary, we will act to strengthen the legal right of farmers to farm.

This Government is committed to backing our farmers and achieving Agrivision 2050; our vision to grow the value of our agricultural sector tenfold.

Submissions are now invited on an Issues Paper that outlines the key features of current Act and provides an overview of legislative arrangements in other jurisdictions, as well as additional agricultural land protection initiatives in Tasmania.

The Terms of Reference, Issues Paper and advice on making submissions, which are due by August 4, can be found on the Department’s website: www.dpipwe.tas.gov.au
