Guy Barnett: Campbell Town Show
As the Liberal member for Lyons, I attended the 176th Campbell Town Show last weekend, and yesterday I moved a motion in the Tasmanian Parliament congratulating the organisers for their efforts in running another successful show last weekend.
Founded in 1838 by a group of visionary landowners, the event is now the longest continually running show in the Commonwealth, showcasing a selection of the very best of Tasmania’s high-quality livestock and wool.
176 years is a long innings and to the Show’s credit it keeps abreast with today’s interests, while still maintaining its heritage.
This event is a tremendous economic and social contributor to the region. I congratulate the Midland Agricultural Association on another job well done.
The Liberal Government recognises that Tasmanian farmers are the backbone of this State and went into the election with a clear plan to grow agriculture in Tasmania tenfold to $10 billion per year by 2050.
This is on top of the $30 million provided by the Liberal Government towards the development of second tranche irrigation schemes in the State, including proposed schemes in the Circular Head, Evandale, Scottsdale, Swan Valley, and the much delayed Southern Highlands regions.
Agriculture is and will continue to be a key strength in the Tasmanian economy.
The State Liberal Government stands by its commitments to rural Tasmania to ensure a strong and prosperous agricultural sector for the benefit of all Tasmanians.
Also attending the event was Federal member for Lyons, Eric Hutchinson MP.
