Adam Brooks: Liberal Government’s Policies Supporting Business in Tasmania

Posted on

The Liberal Government is backing Tasmania’s competitive strengths and helping business to create jobs in Tasmania.

Today I spoke in Parliament on a Matter of Public Importance about the positive impact our policies are having on business.

In a few short months since being elected, the Liberal Government has abolished water and sewerage headworks charges, made it easier for Tasmanian businesses to win Government contracts, and started the process of reforming our planning scheme.

Unlike the former Labor-Green Government, we understand that a strong economy and a vibrant business sector are vital for Tasmania. According to the Sensis Business Index, over 90 per cent of businesses regarded the previous Government’s policies as working against them.

We went to the election promising initiatives which give small businesses in this state the fair go they didn’t get under the Labor-Green Government:

• cutting red and Green tape;
• getting work underway on a single state-wide planning scheme;
• abolishing water and sewerage headworks charges;
• making it easier for Tasmanian businesses to win State Government contracts (Buy Local policy);
• requiring government agencies to pay their bills on time.

Already, the Liberal Government’s headworks holiday has been credited with allowing major projects, such as the redevelopment of the Macquarie Wharf No. 1 shed into a five-star hotel, to go ahead.

Projects such as this provide opportunities for Tasmanian businesses, both in the construction phase and beyond.

The Liberal Government is getting on with the job of rebuilding our economy and delivering our long-term plan for Tasmania.
