Australian Greens response to Japan’s decision to abandon 2014/15 whale hunt

Posted on

Greens Spokesperson for Whaling, Senator Peter Whish-Wilson responds to reports that Japanese Officials have called off next summer’s whale hunt.

“I welcome the decision by the Japanese to call off next summer’s whale slaughter. Let’s hope that whalers will never again stain the waters of the Southern Ocean.

“Unfortunately, the Court victory does not mean the Japanese won’t regroup and lodge an exemption for a new so-called research program.

“Australia must continue to pull out all the diplomatic and legal stops to ensure that Japan does not seek to re-start whaling using legal loopholes.

“Tony Abbott must state to the Japanese government unequivocally that Australia will not tolerate any whaling in our Southern Ocean whatsoever.

“Zero is the only whaling quota Australia should accept,” Senator Whish-Wilson concluded.
