• Tibetans in India hold a peace march to mark 55 years of Tibet Uprising
Tibetan exiles living in India will hold a peace march to mark 55 years since Tibet’s 1959 uprising against China’s invasion of Tibet. The aim is to sharpen the focus of people onto the story of the repressive nature of Chinese rule and the continuing violation of Human Rights by Chinese authorities.
The Tibetan Diaspora group Tibetan Youth Congress is conducting the peace march from Dharamshala, the virtual capital of the Tibetan exiles, to the Indian capital New Delhi. Their aim is to offer support to Tibetans suffering from Chinese brutalities in Tibet.
The 55 walkers expect to cover a distance of about 600km between February 8 and March 10. These 55 people each symbolize “a dark and painful year under Chinese rule”.
Tenzing Jigme, President of Tibetan Youth Congress, said the situation inside Tibet remains critical, and because of this dire situation inside Tibet, the TYC had decided to initiate this Tibetan Uprising March campaign in solidarity with the all Tibetans inside Tibet.
“There have been 125 known cases of self-immolations on the plateau. These brave men and women who set themselves on fire have called for the ‘return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet’ ” said Jigme.
Following the Uprising March, the youth group will present a memorandum outlining five demands to the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi and submit appeals to the United Nations and embassies of other nations.
These five demands include the release of all Tibetans who are currently political prisoners and allowing international media into Tibet.
On March 10, 1959, Tibetans in the capital city of Lhasa rose up against the Chinese occupying forces, leading to the death of thousands of Tibetans and the eventual escape of the Dalai Lama into exile. Each year, Tibetans all over the world observe March 10 as their National Uprising Day.
While Beijing still claims it “peacefully liberated” the region, many Tibetans say Chinese rule has actively eroded their human rights, culture and religion. They want the Dalai Lama’s return from exile in India and they want genuine autonomy for their homeland.
