The Tasmanian Greens today announced their Agriculture: Harnessing Our Natural Advantage Policy Initiative.

“This policy will ensure our agricultural industry is strong for decades to come, by investing in research and development in the key areas which set Tasmania apart from the rest of the world.”

“The key feature of this initiative is establishing a world-class Centre for Agricultural Diversity at the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture.”

“This new facility will go to assisting local producer’s trial and develop heritage and new crops and livestock breeds to expand their markets, which is also an investment in long term agricultural jobs.”

“A Centre for Agricultural Diversity will also attract agricultural biodiversity researchers from around the globe, bring in expertise and dollars.”

“By harnessing our natural advantage we are also investing in career opportunities for young people and ensuring Tasmania continues to create world class agricultural products.”

“Investing in a diverse and productive agricultural sector ensures this critical driver of Tasmania’s economy continues to thrive.”

“Given Tasmania’s isolation it is critical that we overcome the tyranny of distance and global markets by keeping ahead of the pack, developing value added niche products of high value based on what is special about Tasmania.”

“Our soils, climate, GE free status, bio-security and current and future expertise within the sector are what set us apart.”
