Government’s commitment to boost investment applauded
The Property Council has applauded the new Liberal Government for acting on its commitment to
boost investment in Tasmania, announcing today it will waive headworks charges for new
developments for two years.
Tasmanian Executive Director, Mary Massina, said it was encouraging to see the new government
address what was a key barrier to investment so quickly, as it showed a genuine commitment to
economic development, investment and job creation.
“This is a major win for the industry and for all Tasmanians building their dream homes,” Ms
Massina said.
“Not only has the government listened to the concerns of the industry, but it has used a common
sense approach by ensuring developers and mum and dads don’t have to go through a bureaucratic
process of applying, saving money and time.
“The move to waive water and sewerage headworks charges will mean millions of dollars of
investment, bringing with it the creation of much needed jobs.”
Ms Massina said members had been reporting dramatic increases in water and sewerage headwork
charges in recent times and this initiative would free up millions of dollars of investment.
“As most people are aware, Tasmania has been doing it tough in recent times, especially the
property and construction industry,” she said.
“Today’s announcement by the government will go a significant way to stimulating the property and
construction sector and I applaud this prompt action.”
