Australian Labor Party’s ongoing support for a supertrawler ban
The Stop the Trawler Alliance today welcomes the Australian Labor Party’s ongoing support for a supertrawler ban.
Recognising that the threat of supertrawlers fishing in Australian waters still remains, today Joseph Ludwig, ALP Senator for Queensland, announced he would table a Private Members Bill to enable the continued operation of Labor’s 2012 supertrawler legislation which allows for a 2 year temporary ban case by case.
Australia’s fisheries, marine life and recreational fishing require a permanent legislated ban on all industrial freezer-factory trawlers, if we are to secure their future and represent the overwhelming public concern on this critical issue.
Tri-partisan support was given during the lead up to the Tasmanian state election for a permanent ban on all supertrawlers.
The Stop the Trawler Alliance is an alliance of over twenty international, national and state fishing and environment organisations. Over 3,000 Australians have written individual emails to their Federal Members of Parliament calling for a permanent ban in three weeks.
