MARCH IN MARCH AUSTRALIA 2014
Australians united for a better government
Tasmanian March and Rally, March 16, Hobart
At the beginning of January 2014, a small group of concerned, non-aligned citizens began to think about giving voice to the many thousands of Australians who are disillusioned with the direction the Abbott Government is taking. They were concerned that policies were being designed to advantage big business and the wealthy, while policies that assisted the poor and the disadvantaged were being dismantled.
Policies to address climate change have been decimated and areas of unique, globally-valued marine and terrestrial systems have been sacrificed for the sake of big business profit. There is scant regard for World Heritage status.
Asylum seeker policies have become even more inhumane with the recent tragic events unfolding on Manus Island.
‘Many people who have signed up to take part in the march have cited the lack of government transparency and effective communication as a motivating issue’, said Tasmanian coordinator, Margaret McMillan. ‘Many Australian people are frustrated by the lack of information they are given about government policies such as off-shore detention centres for asylum seekers and education and welfare reforms.’
‘Other marchers are railing against what they believe are policies designed to disadvantage our public school system and the threats to the independence of our national broadcaster – the ABC.’
March in March was born as a direct result of citizens empowering themselves to say ‘we want better from our government.’
Tasmanians will march on Sunday March 16th from three venues: the Cenotaph, the cnr of Elizabeth and Warwick Streets and Princes Park, Battery Point, culminating in a rally at Parliament House lawns at 12 noon.
