No Pulp Mill Alliance: Protest, Parliament House Lawns, Tues, Jan 28, 12.30pm
The No Pulp Mill Alliance today announced a public event to coincide with the recall of Parliament to pass more special legislation to shore up the fast-tracked Tamar Valley pulp mill.
The event will be an opportunity for Tasmanians to express their frustration and exasperation that the Labor and Liberal parties will come together again to ram through special legislation to cut out legitimate community opposition as well as to over-rule the current legal challenge in the Supreme Court.
The protest will be on Parliament House lawns next Tuesday 28th January at 12.30 pm.
“This next round of special legislation, for an unknown buyer, compounds the corruption of proper process and abuse of Parliamentary power, and is another indictment on the already discredited pulp mill,” said Lucy Landon-Lane, spokesperson for the No Pulp Mill Alliance.
“This protest is a chance for the people to express their exasperation that our Parliamentarians are taking us back 7 years, back to a recognised low-point in Tasmanian governance. Gunns’ lawyers wrote the last legislation, and this time KordaMentha’s lawyers are writing the legislation. It is an absurd situation and people have every right to be outraged.” she said.
Speakers at the event will include: Peter Cundall, Lucy Landon-Lane (No Pulp Mill Alliance), Peter McGlone (Tasmanian Conservation Trust); Ruth Langford (Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre); Nick McKim (Greens Leader).
The No Pulp Mill Alliance was formed in 2006 and includes: Pulp the Mill, Tasmanian Conservation Trust, Friends of the Tamar Valley, Women Against the Mill, Grandparents Against the Mill, Markets for Change, The Wilderness Society, Environment Tasmania and a number of individuals.
