Nick McKim: World Heritage committee urged to reject Liberal forests threat

Posted on

The Tasmanian Greens today with the Australian Greens submitted a joint letter to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee urging them to reject any attempt by the Federal government to revoke last year’s boundary extension.

Greens Leader Nick McKim MP, who co-authored the letter with Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne, said the minor boundary adjustment approved last year consisted of forest areas recognised for their outstanding universal value and important in maintaining the integrity of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA).

“Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne and I have sent a joint letter to the World Heritage Committee urging them to reject any attempt by the Federal Liberal government to wind back last year’s long-overdue protection of iconic areas including the Styx, Florentine and the Weld,” Mr McKim said.

“Mr Hodgman and Senator Abetz should hang their heads in shame over the international ridicule they are bringing down on Tasmania, with their shocking plan to take the chainsaw to our globally acclaimed World Heritage listed and carbon rich forests.”

“The Greens will always stand up for the integrity of our special Wilderness World Heritage Area.”
