Nick McKim: Bass Strait needs to be recognised as national highway
The Tasmanian Greens today reiterated their support for Bass Strait to be recognised as part of the national highway in light of the draft Productivity Commission report into Tasmanian Shipping and Freight.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP provided the Greens’ initial response to the draft report in which he also ruled out supporting any calls to privatise the state’s public assets, including TasPorts and TT-Line.
“The draft Productivity Commission report into the shipping and freight challenges facing Tasmania make it clear how fraught and complex these issues are,” Mr McKim said.
“The Greens remain committed to seeing Bass Strait recognised as part of the National Highway, and we will continue to work through the complex details, to ensure our local businesses are provided a level playing field with their national counterparts.”
“We will, however take issue with any recommendation, whether made by the Productivity Commission or anyone else, to sell our public assets, and will take a stand to keep that vital infrastructure in public hands.”
