Liberal MP Warren Entsch attacks Corey Bernardi on ‘ gay obsession
Liberal MP Warren Entsch has launched an extraordinary attack on Cory Bernardi (above), saying he is worried by his colleague’s ”obsession” with gay people.
Mr Entsch, a former parliamentary secretary and chief opposition whip, said he cringed when he heard the South Australian senator’s latest comments, in a new book and in a television interview on Monday, in which he accused some women of using abortion as ”an abhorrent form of birth control” and railed against ”non-traditional” family arrangements such as step-families, single-parent families and same-sex parent families.
”He’s obviously got an obsession with people that are gay,” Mr Entsch said. ”It worries me. You’ve really got to watch out for those that have these obsessions. He who protests the loudest …”
Mr Entsch wondered what Senator Bernardi would think if a member of his family turned out to be gay. ”Would he advocate sterilisation?”

Mr Entsch said as a stepfather he was offended by Senator Bernardi’s comment that a biological mother and father who are married represented the ”gold standard” for children’s development.
”I am a stepdad,” Mr Entsch said. ”I love my daughter to pieces. The love that I have in my family is as strong a bond as anybody’s.”
He also took issue with Senator Bernardi’s assertion that boys raised by single parents were more likely to commit crime while girls raised by single parents were more likely to be promiscuous, noting that former Liberal leader Malcolm Turnbull was raised by his father.
”Is he a lesser person?” Mr Entsch asked. ”Is he a second-grade citizen because of that? I don’t know how many charges Malcolm’s been on.”
Mr Entsch described Senator Bernardi’s views on abortion as ”nonsense” and questioned whether he would oppose abortion in a case of rape or incest.
He said the overwhelming majority of the Liberal Party took issue with Senator Bernardi’s views. ”I am elected to represent all of my constituents and it’s not for me to be judgmental.”
