The Clean Energy Finance Corporation is safe for now
The Australian Greens celebrate saving the Clean Energy Finance Corporation today in the Senate and will continue to do everything they can to make it permanent. Next task is to stop Tony Abbott and Greg Hunt dismantling the Climate Change Authority and clean energy laws.
“Tony Abbott’s opposition to the CEFC is pure ideological spite. The evidence supporting it is overwhelming. It is reducing emissions, rolling out renewable energy and saving the government money,” said Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne.
“We welcome that today the Senate voted against Mr Abbott’s destructive efforts, and call on him to abandon his attack on the CEFC.
“Renewable energy is key to a low carbon future in this nation and the CEFC will play a critical role in achieving the clean energy and clean jobs of the next half century.
“The CEFC is working and needs to stay. It has funded over 39 projects in clean technology with another 179 in the pipeline. Already these investments are expected to achieve a reduction of 3.88 million tonnes of carbon pollution.
“If the Prime Minister’s attack on the CEFC had been successful it would have been a major blow to Australia’s burgeoning renewable energy sector.
“The Greens will continue to listen to the experts and act consistently with the science, starting with our motion for a Senate inquiry into Tony Abbott’s Direct Action sham. Our inquiry will expose the hollow policy for what it is – a ploy to distract Australians from the Prime Minister’s global warming denialism.”
