Derwent River on the mend

Positive Progress but More Still Needs to be Done

The Tasmanian Greens today applauded the significant progress that has been made in reducing pollution, storm water and effluent levels in Hobart’s River Derwent.

Greens Environment spokesperson, Cassy O’Connor MP said that while there was still a long way to go, this was a good example of how scientists, major industries, and State and Local governments can work together to rehabilitate environments and improve practices.

“It is great to see the results of this year’s State of the Derwent Report and the community, state and local government, and industry should all be congratulated on the tangible progress made to improve the health of our life-giving estuary,” Ms O’Connor said.

“There are still some practices and legacy issues that’ll require ongoing effort but it is encouraging to see remediation of the Derwent is being taken seriously by all.”

“The Derwent estuary makes Hobart the stunning port city that it is, and it’s good to see the growing respect for our river reflected in the environmental efforts of all sectors.”

“As we see whales returning to the Derwent estuary and increasing public use of the river, we need to ensure that remediation efforts continue with the support of all stakeholders.”

“I would like to particularly acknowledge the efforts of Nyrstar and Norske Skog, over a number of years, to significantly reduce the level of pollutants and contaminated effluent going into our beautiful river.”
