WorkSafe Tasmania Month a resounding success

Posted on

With close to 8,000 Tasmanians attending more than 160 work health and safety events across the
State during WorkSafe Tasmania Month 2013, the Month has been heralded as another resounding
success.

WorkSafe Tasmania Month, which ran from 30 September – 1 November 2013, was part of a
nationwide effort to raise awareness about work health and safety, as well as reduce work-related
injury, illness and death.

WorkCover Tasmania Board member Bob Gozzi said while there was a downward trend in the
number of workplace injuries in Tasmania, it was important for all Tasmanians to take responsibility
for work health and safety in their workplaces.

“Attending a free information session as part of WorkSafe Tasmania Month is an ideal way to keep
abreast of new trends and innovations and for individuals to take responsibility to ensure the health
and safety of all those in their workplace,” Mr Gozzi said.

“This year the WorkSafe Month Program of Events had a strong focus on health and wellbeing, with
event topics ranging from humour in the workplace to respectful workplace behaviours to preparing
for an ageing workforce and sleep and workplace health and wellbeing.

“Organisations that implement workplace health and wellbeing programs are known to have
increased employee morale and engagement, reduced workplace injuries and associated expenses
and increased retention rates.

“With Tasmanians spending about one third of their lives at work, it makes good sense to view the
workplace as an important setting to improve health and wellbeing.”

Mr Gozzi said anecdotal feedback from attendees at the free events had been very positive and he
looked forward to hearing about new safety innovations and programs being implemented in
Tasmanian workplaces as a result.

“For the first time, WorkSafe Tasmania Month also featured free tradeshows in both Hobart and
Launceston, providing Tasmanians with easy access to practical tools and resources for managing
safety in the workplace,” he said.

“There are few things in life more important than a loved one’s or your own health and wellbeing
and WorkSafe Tasmania is proud to host a month of free events held across the State to provide
accessible, practical and up-to-date information about work health and safety.”
