TFGA applauds new UTAS food science degree course

Posted on

Tasmanian farmers today applauded the University of Tasmania’s initiative to introduce next year an applied science course that specialises in food technology and the skills needed to run food-based businesses.

The university today launched its BAppSc (Food Science and Innovation) three-year degree course at its Launceston campus. It targets potential students intent on careers in small and medium sized agrifood businesses.

“This is exactly what we have been looking for,” Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association chief executive Jan Davis said today.

“This is a real opportunity for 20 or so Tasmanians, value adding to what we do better than anyone else, producing food.

“The university is building courses based on Tasmania’s strengths. Value-adding to our agricultural products is exactly the right recipe.

“Those food-based businesses that are successful in Tasmania are those that concentrate on maximising the appeal of our quality produce in terms of imagination, presentation and reliability of delivery and service.

“Provenance is all important these days. Consumers want to know the source of their food, from the farm through the value chain.

“We need graduates with special skills in food technology to develop new products and skills to ensure those businesses are viable. Unfortunately, the path is littered with people who had good intentions but lacked the skills to guarantee their longevity. Consumers are unforgiving.”

Ms Davis said she believed the degree course would also appeal to TAFE students wanting to go to gain degrees.
