TasRail Welcomes Opening of New Airport ‘Crash Gate.’

Posted on

TasRail has welcomed the completion of a new ‘crash gate’ that will allow quicker access to the southern end of the Launceston airport in the event of an emergency.

CEO Damien White stated the new gate was a great example of the company’s ‘safety first’ culture.

“That culture doesn’t just include our own operations but also how we can assist others, such as our neighbours, to achieve better safety outcomes.

“The opening of a new gate might not sound like a very big thing, but in the event of an emergency, this new access point may save crucial seconds for first responders.

“Although we’ll hopefully never see an emergency event occur at the Airport, managing the risk and anticipating safety options gives us an added level of security.”

The success of the project was strongly attributed to the collaborative approach between the Airport, Airservices and TasRail.

“I would like to commend Tasmanian Rail and Launceston Airport for working collaboratively to establish the new southern crash gate,” said Airservices Executive General Manager, Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF), Michelle Bennetts. “Every second counts in an emergency and this new crash gate will further ensure that ARFF’s response to any incident south of the airport is rapid.”
