Support for state sector amendment
The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed the Premier’s amendment to the State Service Act 2000, returning the current redeployment provisions back to the original 12 month timeframe.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said the move vindicated the Greens’ position during negotiations on the 2011 public sector reforms, prompted by the 2010-2011 Mid Year Financial Report, that reliance on mass job cuts was not the solution.
“The Greens’ preference at the time was to keep the redeployment provisions at 12 months, but instead the compromise of six months was agreed to, as an improvement on the original proposition of three months,” Mr McKim said.
“Clearly the emergency redeployment provisions have not been necessary as a state budget management tool, and the Greens are more than happy to support the original 12 months reinstated in the Act.”
Mr McKim also reiterated the Greens do not support public sector forced redundancies on operational and economic grounds.
“This is a position the Greens took into our negotiations in 2011, held to then, and still hold to today.”
“We need to remain focused on improving efficiency and productivity across the public sector, such as the centralisation of ICT, and improved employee development through consistent performance management without compromising on service delivery to the community.”
