Puppy farm concerns
The Tasmanian Greens today encouraged all animal-loving Tasmanians to have input into the current discussion paper on dog welfare standards in Tasmania, with public consultation closing on Friday the 22nd of November.
Greens Animal Welfare spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP said that there was a deep held concern within the Tasmanian community about puppy farm operations and their cruelty.
“We are concerned about anecdotal reports that puppy farming is becoming more common across Tasmania, especially as the Department cannot rule out that the practice is growing,” Ms O’Connor said.
“Often these puppy farms involve continuously breeding bitches without rest, all while they are kept in appalling conditions, like in cages or boxes without access to exercise, interaction or stimulation.”
“I have been contacted by many concerned Tasmanians expressing abhorrence at the lack of regulation of dog breeding in Tasmania.”
“All responsible dog owners would understand the level of attention and love a dog needs and deserves, and it is heartbreaking that so many dogs are being deprived of this.”
“The people purchasing puppies to love and care for would, more often than not, have no idea of the cruelty from which their new family member had escaped.”
“The Greens had advocated the Animal Welfare Act be reviewed and welcome that occurring, and linked to that process is the current specific review of dog welfare standards.”
