Cross restored after 130 years absence
1880
2013
Historic All Saints Church in South Hobart replaced a stone cross on the top of the west wall that had been missing for some one hundred and thirty years.
The cross, carved by stonemason Duncan Foster, was blessed by the Rector of All Saints, Fr David O’Neill in the presence of parishioners of All Saints and members of the South Hobart Progress Association whose gift will allow two of the three missing crosses to be replaced.
The replacement of the cross represents another milestone in the church’s restoration programme. Chairman of the Restoration Appeal Committee, Mr Dan McNeill OAM, said that “the generosity of so many people from inside and outside the parish has allowed much more work to progress more quickly than we had ever hoped for.”
The event marks the completion of the restoration of the west wall which will allow for the re-installation of the West Windows restored by Original Stained Glass’s Gavin Merrington.
