Tassie’s gun laws are too lax

Posted on

The Tasmanian Greens said the current review of the Firearms Act 1996 must strengthen and not weaken the current laws.

Greens Police and Emergency Services spokesperson Paul O’Halloran MP said recent firearm seizures had only increased community concern about the need for tougher gun laws.

“We cannot tackle gun theft and violence without strengthening the current laws,” Mr O’Halloran said.

“That means restricting access to high power and rapid-fire weapons, removing semi-automatic hand guns and strengthening storage security requirements.”

“Nobody knows how many more unregistered firearms are out there, and each one presents a threat to public safety.”

“The Minister must commit publicly to not watering down the state’s gun control provisions under pressure from gun lobbyists, and he must outline a clear timeline for tabling the long-awaited amendments.”
