Tasmanian Land Conservancy founders named in Australia’s “Top 50”

Posted on

Tasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC) co-founders, Nathan Males, Jim Mulcahy and Greg Blake were celebrated today at an event in Melbourne to honour Australia’s Top 50 Philanthropic Gifts.

The significance of the $50 that the three friends each donated (over a cup of coffee) to start the organisation was recognised over gifts of much higher value. In the words of co-founder Jim Mulcahy “It was $101 to register an organisation and we opened a bank account with the remaining $49 – with that the TLC was born.”

With hard work, an impressive board and sheer determination to protect Tasmania’s most precious species and habitats, the Tasmanian Land Conservancy has worked to conserve over 2% of the private land in Tasmania for biodiversity. It was only 12 years ago that TLC started with humble beginnings over cups of coffee at the Retro café in Hobart’s Salamanca Place.

CEO, Jane Hutchinson, said: “As the saying goes, from little things, big things grow. The start of TLC is a fabulous example of that. We are thrilled that Nathan, Jim and Greg’s contribution has been recognised at this very special event.

Celebrating Australia’s ‘Top 50 Philanthropic Gifts’ was the brain child of the Myer Family Company, The Myer Foundation and Sidney Myer Fund, Pro Bono Australia, Philanthropy Australia and the Asia-Pacific Centre for Social Investment and Philanthropy at Swinburne University of Technology.

It is one way to recognise the incredible impact that philanthropy can have in our society and to inspire more people to contribute to shaping our culture, society and public policy. A great gift is not just about a large sum of money. It can be a vision that understands what can be achieved by taking small steps and encouraging others to follow.”
