Tasmanian irrigators let down by red-green tape
Tasmanian irrigators let down by red-green tape have been promised swifter action under the new commonwealth government.
Federal Member for Lyons Eric Hutchinson said it’s alarming how long Tasmanian Irrigation has been waiting for an environmental approval for stage three of the South East Scheme.
“What was supposed to be a 20 business day process has now gone on for more than five months,” Mr Hutchinson said.
“The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation application was lodged at the end of April. A so-called Stop the Clock was put in place awaiting more information, forcing irrigators to endure this long wait.
“I have spoken with the new Environment Minister Greg Hunt to communicate the concerns and he has promised action within a week. This is in stark contrast to the previous administration which was letting Tasmania down far too often.”
