Labor party looking at itself instead of the warming planet
Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne says if Bill Shorten’s Labor party supports the repeal of the current carbon price, it will be caving in to Tony Abbott’s climate denialism.
“The Labor Party is looking for ways to help itself, rather than looking for ways to help the planet,” Senator Milne said.
“I am calling on Bill Shorten’s Labor party not to cave in to the Prime Minister for science denialism. Don’t cave in on global warming.
“You cannot support carbon pricing by voting against one to ‘clear the air’. The logic behind that argument is irrational and seriously flawed.
“If Labor doesn’t block Tony Abbott’s repeal legislation – it is ending Australia’s price on pollution. The emissions trading scheme that is already law.
“The price on pollution is already working to reduce the emissions driving global warming. Repealing it will put money in the pockets of big polluters and take us backwards.
“It beggars belief that with the intensity of bushfires that have just ravaged NSW, and with the overwhelming weight of evidence from the world’s scientists, that the Labor party would turn its back on legislation that is reducing carbon pollution.
“A backflip now would be cowardice and would demonstrate an overwhelming lack of leadership in the face of global warming.”
