Door open to inappropriate development on Kunanyi
The Tasmanian Greens today voted against moves by the Liberal and Labor parties to strip the Wellington Park Trust of its veto powers over inappropriate development on kunanyi/Mt Wellington.
Greens Environment spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP said that the move was a backwards step that would open the way to inappropriate developments that undermined the cherished natural values for which the mountain is reserved.
“The people of Hobart have a very close relationship with the mountain, and they don’t want to see unrestrained and inappropriate development on it,” Ms O’Connor said.
“Labor and the Liberals have removed an essential layer of community consultation, potentially opening the way for developments that will damage the mountain’s natural appeal.”
“They have weakened the protections against inappropriate development in the Wellington Park.”
“When developments happen without proper community consultation and a rigorous assessment process, it inevitably leads to big, enduring mistakes like golden arches or a cable car on kunanyi.
“It’s a sad day for our beautiful mountain,” Ms O’Connor said.
