Digital risk assessment apps and predator protector cages take out Tasmanian safety awards

A digital risk assessment app for the construction industry, predator protector fish cages, and a
workplace health and wellbeing program for tradies, were just some of the winners announced today
at the 2013 WorkSafe Tasmania Awards.

WorkCover Board member, Dr Rob Walters said the new and improved WorkSafe Tasmania Awards
aim to recognise and reward Tasmanians for their efforts in reducing injuries and deaths in the
workplace.

“Select Roofing took out the ‘Best health and safety practices in a small business’ category for the
development of an innovative risk assessment app which considers all risks when working at heights
to ensure workers’ safety,” Dr Walters said.

“Dan Barich from Caterpillar Underground Mining and Ted Bell from Tas Gas Networks were both
named winners in the ‘Best individual contribution to workplace health and safety’ category in the
employee and WHS staff member sections, respectively.

“The design and development of a world first fish cage to protect Huon Aquaculture’s workers from
seal predators and reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls took out the ‘Best solution to an identified
WHS issue’ category.

“Lauren Filippe from Freycinet’s new luxury boutique hotel Saffire was named Tasmanian Health and
Safety Representative of the Year’ for her work implementing safe and visually attractive solutions
for work, health and safety issues at the hotel.”

Dr Walters said that in the ‘Best injury management and return to work system’ category, VEC Civil
Engineering Pty Ltd based in Ulverstone was named the winner.

“VEC Civil Engineering also took out the category winner in the ‘Best WHS management system—
private sector’ for the development of an integrated occupational health and safety, environment and
quality system called VECSafe,” he said.

“Moving back to the north of the State, the Tasmanian Health Organisation – North received the
winner’s title in the ‘Best WHS management system—public sector’ category for the organisation’s

“Lisa Burnell from Ronald Young & Co Builders was named the winner of the ‘Commitment to a
workplace health and wellbeing—individual’ category for her work in driving the organisation’s
tailored health and wellbeing program, including extending the program to their entire contractor
workforce.

“While in the ‘Commitment to a workplace health and wellbeing program’ category, Synergy Capital
Management and Cement Australia Holdings were dual winners.”

Dr Walters said the Overall Winner of the 2013 WorkSafe Tasmania Awards would be announced in
Launceston at a free ceremony on Friday, 1 November from 3-4pm at Country Club Tasmania.
