Rejection of Same-Sex Marriage at Ballot Box Welcomed by the Save Marriage Coalition

Posted on

The public’s rejection of same-sex marriage at the Federal election has been welcomed by the Save Marriage Coalition.

“Former Prime Minister Rudd made re-defining marriage a central issue of the campaign but was soundly defeated. After back-flipping on marriage and then making it a front and centre issue, Mr Rudd even confirmed legislation would be introduced in the first 100 days of office. His campaign was aggressively backed by the gay lobby,” said Guy Barnett, Spokesman for the Save Marriage Coalition.

“Saturday’s vote is a resounding rejection of same-sex marriage and the push to make it a priority for debate.”

“The Coalition policy to uphold marriage as being between a man and woman is appreciated. We congratulate the newly elected Federal Government on its victory and commitment to defend marriage,” said Mr Barnett.

Independent surveys commissioned by the Save Marriage Coalition in May 2013 showed that Tasmanians overwhelmingly placed issues such as the economy, jobs and health above same-sex marriage as a priority and this has now been expressed again in the Federal election results.

Despite a high-profile campaign by the gay lobby in Tasmania, pro-marriage candidates were elected in a majority of Tasmanian lower House seats. The vote for parties promoting re-defining marriage plummeted across the state with the Greens’ vote halving and Labor‘s vote at a record low.

“The focus on same-sex marriage during the Federal election confirms marriage is a Federal issue and we call on the Tasmanian Government to take the message and cease any efforts to make it a legislative priority in State Parliament.

“Marriage is a cornerstone of family life, a foundation of strong and stable societies and an umbrella under which children can be nurtured and flourish. The Save Marriage Coalition will continue its work to protect and promote marriage and to stand up for the right of children to have both a mum and a dad,” Mr Barnett concluded.
