COALITION FREE VOTE AND CROSS PARTY WORKING GROUP ARE TOP PRIORITIES

Australia’s marriage equality advocates are ready to work with the incoming government, saying a number of high-profile Coalition MPs in support of equality have been re-elected.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“Marriage equality has been at the forefront of the election, with Liberal, Labor, and Greens candidates who support equality rewarded for campaigning in favour of the reform.”

“In particular, high-profile Coalition members who publicly support marriage equality have been re-elected, including Malcolm Turnbull, Kelly O’Dwyer, Wyatt Roy and Teresa Gambaro, and we look forward to working with them to achieve a Coalition conscience vote.”

“The national conversation about marriage equality reached new levels this election, with support among candidates higher than it has ever been.”

“With MPs and voters across all parties supportive of reform, the Prime Minister elect, Tony Abbott, will not be able ignore what has become an aspirational issue for many Australians.”

Mr Croome said AME will build on its strong working relationship with all parties to move the issue forward.

“We will work with marriage equality supporters across all parties to establish a cross-party working group.”
