Liberal plan to scrap CO2 price to cost Tasmania $50m per year

Posted on

The Tasmanian Greens today called on the Tasmanian Liberal Party to stand up to the Abbott Government over its plans to scrap the carbon price, which will rip more than $50 million from state coffers every year.

In response to a question from Greens Energy spokesperson Kim Booth in State Parliament this morning, the Treasurer Lara Giddings revealed that the Liberal plan to scrap the carbon price would cost Hydro Tasmania more than $160million over the forward estimates.

“In another display of the arrogance of absolute power, the Abbott Liberal government is determined to scrap the carbon price, no matter the damage to the economy,” Mr Booth said.

“The Abbott Liberals might be a party of climate change deniers, but there is no denying the catastrophic economic impact of scrapping the carbon price on Tasmania.”

“Scrapping the carbon price will cost Tasmania the equivalent of more than 500 full time nurses, police or teachers annually.”

“It will drive up the cost of electricity for mum and dad electricity users, and help contribute to climate change.”
