Community Fight Can Save Devonport Show
The Tasmanian Greens today expressed concerns that the Devonport Show faced an uncertain future and urged the community to come together and explore options to secure the long term viability of the event.
Greens Member for Braddon, Paul O’Halloran MP, said the Devonport Show held an important place in the region’s calendar and gave local producers a platform to gain recognition for the outstanding work they do.
“I really hope that a timely, long term solution is found to this problem. I imagine there are a lot of long time exhibitors who would be feeling anxious about this,” Mr O’Halloran said.
“For over a century, the Devonport Show has provided a consistent occasion for locals and visitors to come together and celebrate what the region has to offer, and to lose it would be a real shame.”
“These annual events provide a reliable opportunity for people to form and strengthen personal and business relationships, this is how the fabric of a community is formed and maintained.”
“If the show is struggling to attract one major sponsor, then we’d urge serious consideration is given to a loose coalition of local businesses and council potentially coming together to see if they can help out keeping the show open.”
“Similar events around the state have faced this same problem in modern times, but managed to reinvigorate their local brand and come back stronger,” said Mr O’Halloran.
