Tasmanian youth lead the Nation in voter participation

Posted on

Australian Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson said Tasmanian youth were leading the nation in voter enrolment as the deadline for the close of the electoral rolls draws near. Australian Electoral Commission data for 30 June 2013 shows that youth participation rates for 18-25 year-olds in Tasmania are the highest in Australia at 85.7%, leading the ACT by 2.7%, and QLD by 15.1%.

“I believe young people have an integral role to play in the bright future of Tasmania – their vote in the coming election is powerful and can make all the difference,” said Senator Peter Whish-Wilson.

“Young people care about climate change, refugees, cuts to their universities, marriage equality, and the clean economy that will drive their future – the only party standing up on these issues are the Greens.

“Young Tasmanians are passionate and engaged and I’m unsurprised and proud they lead Australia in voter participation.

“But we still need to hear from the over 6,000 young Tasmanians remaining unenrolled – we need their voice in the coming election,” Senator Whish-Wilson concluded.

People can enrol online at http://aec.gov.au/enrol/ until rolls close at 8pm on Monday, August 12th.
