Tasmanian Lower House ready and waiting for marriage equality
The Tasmanian Greens today again welcomed the Tasmanian Lower Houses endorsement of same-sex marriage and committed to continuing to push for the reform regardless of the outcome of the federal election.
Greens Leader, Nick McKim MP, said that Tasmania was perfectly positioned to pass the legislation required to enact marriage equality and reap the social and economic benefits that other nations around the world were now enjoying.
“The Tasmanian Lower House has today sent a clear message that we are ready for the state to move forward with this legislation,” said Mr McKim.
“Tasmania is a progressive state and the laws on same-sex marriage are currently lagging behind community sentiment.”
“This week we have seen New Zealand’s marriage equality law come into effect and couples from Australia taking the trip across the Tasman to get hitched. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if people had access to this service
“It was disappointing to see the Liberals again hiding behind a flimsy legal argument instead of taking the opportunity to place their personal opinion on marriage on the public record.”
“I am looking forward to moving on with this legislation and placing Tasmania squarely within the group of societies that are showing leadership on this inclusive reform.”
