Tarkine recognised for its adventure tourism credentials

Posted on

The Tasmanian Greens today highlighted that the Tarkine region has yet again been recognised for it’s adventure tourism potential after hosting the latest round of a high profile windsurfing competition.

Greens Member for Braddon, Paul O’Halloran MP, said that despite the region being consistently recognised for its natural beauty and capacity for top quality wilderness experiences, including adventure pursuits, both old parties continue to keep their heads in the sand over its potential.

“The organisers of last weekend’s Redbull Storm Chasers event, which received international publicity, claimed that the Tarkine coast had provided conditions for the best windsurfing they had ever seen,” said Mr O’Halloran.

“We are sitting on a gold mine as far as modern tourism is concerned, there are not many unspoilt places left in the world that can boast mountains, rivers, coastline and forests all suitable for the entire spectrum of adventure recreation activities.”

“There are several other examples of places around the world setting themselves up as adventure tourism hubs and experiencing exceptional economic success.”

“CNN recently listed the Tarkine in its top ten list of great wilderness places alongside the Serengeti, Egypt’s pyramids and the Grand Canyon.”

“The State Liberals are stuck in an innovation free, entrepreneurship free and creative economy free mindset that wants to cheat Tasmania out of any long term financial, social or environmental prosperity flowing from the Tarkine.”

“It is utterly bizarre that the old parties are so hell-bent on destroying the goose that lays the golden egg by continuing to ignore the fact the Tarkine underpins the diversification potential for local communities in the North West,” Mr O’Halloran said.
