Wrong message to drink drivers, says Marti Zucco
Palmer United Party candidate for Franklin, Marti Zucco, today expressed his concern at Greens leader Christine Milne’s “soft approach” towards one her party’s federal candidates who is facing a serious drink-driving charge.
“To merely say that this will be dealt with at a local level is simply not good enough when the candidate is standing in a federal seat,” Mr Zucco said.
“This serious matter should be dealt with by their federal executive and in particular the federal leader. It should not simply be brushed it under the carpet.
“Drink-driving is a very serious issue that kills and destroys families. Our leaders must ensure they send a clear message that drink-driving is unacceptable and the Greens leader needs to send that very message to the general public.
“I have no doubt the candidate is remorseful. My issue is not with the candidate, but the leader who should take a leadership role. The federal Greens leader should take on responsibility for all candidates who are part of the federal system and ensure disciplinary action occurs in these circumstances.
“If I was in this position I would expect the federal leader of my party to take the appropriate disciplinary action and not hand-ball it off as a trivial matter.
“I call on the Greens leader to send a message to all Australians that drink-driving is dangerous, a blight on our society and completely unacceptable.
“I am extremely disappointed in the Greens leader’s attitude towards this very serious issue,” Mr Zucco declared.
