Tarkine Tourist Sign Vandalism Should Stop – Brown
Patron of Save the Tarkine, former senator Bob Brown, has called on the anti-Tarkine lobby to rein in the people who have vandalized a set of tourist signs at a lookout over the Henty Dunes in the southern Tarkine region.
“Being pro-mines is one thing, but being anti-tourism is not on in Tasmania where tourism provides more jobs than mining and logging put together”,Brown said.
“There is a nasty element in the pro-mining campaign and it should be kept in check by the industry and by the politicians of the Labor and Liberal parties who are campaigning so hard against protecting the Tarkine’s natural and cultural heritage from mining”, Brown said.
“The miners’ claim that yesterday’s Federal Court decision overturning the Federal Minister for the Environment’s approval of a mine in the Tarkine Protected Area was based on a technicality is totally wrong. In fact the judge indicated that if the minister reads his advice on how to protect the endangered Tasmanian devil he might reasonable save the threatened devil habitat by refusing to approve the large, open-cut mine”, Brown said.
