Wood Supply Commitment Key Forest Agreement Milestone
Environment Groups have welcomed the permanent retirement of 108 000 cubic metres per
annum of peeler logs, announced by the Commonwealth Government and Ta Ann Tasmania
today, as an important milestone in the implementation of the Tasmanian Forest Agreement and
reservation of agreed reserves.
The groups have also endorsed Ta Ann Tasmania’s decision to enter into a new contract which
specifies that wood can only be sourced from outside the 500 000 hectares of agreed forest
reserves – aside from a small, finite number of agreed transition coupes.
“Ta Ann Tasmania is to be acknowledged for playing a leadership role in supporting the TFA
through both a reduction in supply, and an agreement to not source wood from agreed high
conservation value forests scheduled for permanent protection,” said Wilderness Society
Tasmania Campaign Manager Vica Bayley.
“These changes support the protection of the 500,000 ha of high conservation value forests that
need to be formally reserved over the next two years for the Forest Agreement to be
implemented and conservation durability delivered.”
“The Commonwealth Government and Ta Ann’s agreement to retire 108,000 cubic metres of
peeler logs is a significant step, and an important investment in the implementation of the
Tasmania Forest Agreement. Environmental signatories welcome this progress in supporting the
forest protection opportunities the agreement provides,” said Environment Tasmania Director
Phill Pullinger.
“Ta Ann’s long-term commitment to source wood from outside the agreed reserve areas is critical
to the workability of the agreement and adds a further element to ensuring lasting conservation
outcomes,” said Jonathan La Nauze of the Australian Conservation Foundation
