SURVEY SAYS SAME-SEX MARRIAGE ONE OF TWO LEAST IMPORTANT ISSUES FOR TASMANIANS
Sunday 2 June 2013

A survey of more than 400 Tasmanians shows that the legalising of same-sex marriage is one of the two least important of twelve issues.

The most important issues for Tasmania, in order, were:

This survey proves that the most important issues to Tasmanians are clearly health and hospital services, employment and job creation and education. The two least important issues were the legalising of same-sex marriage and changes to abortion laws.

The survey also showed that the Tasmanian proposed same-sex marriage Bill was seen as a low or very low priority by the majority of the population. The survey showed that nearly 2 out of 3 Tasmanians believed that marriage legislation should be left to the Commonwealth, with only 36% of those surveyed believing that Tasmania should go it alone and introduce our own legislation.

These results should put an end to the ongoing distraction of attempts to legalise same-sex marriage in Tasmanian. We would ask the proponents of same-sex marriage to listen to the Tasmanian community and support the Tasmanian Parliament focus on what is important.

Any further push for same-sex marriage by this Labor/Green government or in the Legislative Council should now come to an end.

We specifically ask the Hon Ruth Forrest MLC to immediately withdraw her motion to reintroduce the same-sex marriage bill.

The priorities for Tasmanians are very clear.

The survey was conducted in the first week of May by Myriad Consulting.
