BEST RESPONSE TO GUN CRIME IS TOUGHER GUN CONTROL

The Tasmanian Greens Police and Emergency Services spokesperson Paul O’Halloran MP today said that tighter gun control was the only viable solution to concerns over gun crime in Tasmania

“Toughening the controls over handguns, tightening gun sale buy-back deals and even stricter rules for rifle ownership will do far more than simply focusing on the law enforcement end,” Mr O’Halloran said.

“Instead of dealing with the problem of gun crime after it has happened, we should be taking steps to actually prevent crime happening in the first place.”

“Given the significant number of crimes that are committed using stolen weapons, we also need to be looking at tighter controls around gun storage.”

“The knee-jerk reaction of the Liberal Party is always fear mongering and populist chest beating about the need for stronger law enforcement, but that does not address the root of the problem.”

“Tasmanians are lucky to live in a low-crime state and we are all better off keeping it that way by limiting gun ownership to those who have a legitimate need for one.”
