Kokoda battles some of the most important and yet least recognised in Australian history
Time to give back
The Kokoda battles were some of the most important and yet least recognised in Australian history, Guy Barnett said today.
“The Japanese were advancing fast towards Port Morseby and the Australian mainland. Darwin and northern Australia was bombed 62 times and the threat was very real. The courage and endurance demonstrated by our soldiers can not be overestimated.
But it is important we do not forget the incredible service and sacrifice of the PNG nationals, affectionately known as Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels. They were involved in providing invaluable help to our troops during world war two. They assisted the sick and wounded, carried food and medical supplies amidst the harsh terrain. They acted beyond the call of duty.
Our Government has now officially recognised their service following lobbying with the RSL and others and my successful senate motion in June 2008.
It is time for us to give back and this fundraising effort for the kids on the Kokoda track is a great way to do that”, Mr Barnett concluded.
Mr Barnett was a guest speaker with former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett at the Kids of Kokoda fundraising lunch at the MCG in Melbourne today.
