Have a say about accessibility in your city

Posted on

information about the positive and negative disability access in your city will be collected as part of the Disability Access Survey 2013 being undertaken by Anna Reynolds, Greens Candidate for Denison.

“While there is much to be praised about increased accessibility in most Tasmanian cities and towns, there is still a way to go,” Ms Reynolds said.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that while there are many positive aspects to disability access there are still barriers to overcome. These include:

insufficient numbers of accessible toilets
disabled car parking spaces can be located too far away
timing of traffic lights favour cars so that people in wheel chairs or walking more slowly do not have time to cross busy roads safely
some two and three storey buildings cannot be accessed because there is no lift.

“With the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) starting on July 1st in Tasmania, a full audit of access in the community will benefit everyone.”

The NDIS will be introduced gradually over the next few years beginning with a focus on 16—25 years olds.

“One of the key features of the scheme is supporting people to have full access to their community,” Ms Reynolds said.

Share your experience as part of the Disability Access Survey 2013 by contacting Anna Reynolds at anna.reynolds@greens.org.au or access the survey online at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XQKZTP5.

Results from the Survey will be sent to relevant Local Councils, State and Federal Governments to ensure they are aware of the work that needs to be done to improve accessibility in our communities.
