Four Tasmanian businesses will be jetting off to Canberra at the end of this month to compete for
national recognition for their commitment to work health and safety at the Safe Work Australia
Awards.

The contenders, including Sibelco Australia Ltd, Pitt & Sherry Consulting Engineers together with
Grange Resources, and Temtrol Technologies were all award winners at the 2012 WorkSafe
Tasmania Awards.

WorkSafe Tasmania spokesperson, Mr Damon Thomas said that these organisations’ award winning
safety initiatives ranged from new and improved safety management systems to the development of
a Remote Explosive Loading Unit.

“The Tasmanian entrants in this year’s national Safe Work Australia Awards are all of high calibre
and highlight what can be achieved through dedication and innovation when working to improve
work health and safety,” Mr Thomas said.

“It’s a very positive sign to see so many Tasmanian businesses recognised as finalists at Australian
safety’s night of nights and also a great opportunity for our businesses to be profiled at a national
level.”

Mr Thomas said that with 1,294 Tasmanians injured in small businesses across the State in 2011, it
was fantastic to have the small business, Temtrol Technologies, competing in the ‘Best workplace
health and safety practice/s in a small business’ category.

“In 2010 a complete review was undertaken of Temtrol’s safety management system, with the result
being a new streamlined system tailored to the organisation’s core business tasks,” Mr Thomas said.
“The Overall Winner of the 2012 WorkSafe Tasmania Awards, Pitt & Sherry, together with Grange
Resources, designed and produced a Remote Explosive Loading Unit to address the dangers
associated with working under, or near the high wall of an open cut pit.

“This joint solution eliminated the need for personnel to work, or be located within, the 18 metre
rock-fall zone.”

The winners of the 8th annual Safe Work Australia Awards will be announced at a gala ceremony in
Canberra on Monday, 29 April 2013.
