New Zealand same-sex marriage laws have no impact

People fed up with Tasmania being used as a social experiment at the expense of our economy

New Zealand’s support of same-sex marriage laws will have no impact in Australia, said Mr Guy Barnett Spokesperson for the Save Marriage Coalition.

“The Australian Parliament debated and rejected the push for same-sex marriage last year and rejected it overwhelmingly. The Prime Minister Hon Julia Gillard said yesterday that she would not change her position in opposition to same-sex marriage.

Marriage is a federal not a state issue. Introducing same-sex marriage legislation in Tasmania is a constitutional ‘no no’. Section 51(21) of the Constitution says so.

Plans to reintroduce a Bill to legalise same-sex marriage in Tasmania is just further evidence our state is being used as a social experiment at the expense of our economy,

Parliament must get its priorities right if we have any chance of getting our economy back on track.

The state Parliament now has a back log of important Bills to deal with dealing with our economy, our education system, superannuation, payroll tax not to mention the state budget.

This is the worst possible time to be even thinking of debating again a Bill that was debated and defeated only last year.

Despite some overseas countries reconsidering legalising same-sex marriage and the New Zealand decision, less than 15 of the 200 plus countries in the world have legalised it.

Mr Croome’s estimate of more than 1000 same-sex couples flying to New Zealand to marry is fanciful as their marriage is not recognised in Australia” Mr Barnett said.
